China and France
Political dialogue, aerospace, consumer goods and cultural connections sustain the relationship. France maintains bilateral dialogue within the European framework and raises differences over market access and international issues. The economy combines specialised French exports with much broader imports from China.

Definitions and sources
Trade adds both directions. Shares refer to the country’s total goods exports; investment is an accumulated stock, not an annual flow. Every figure retains the currency and period of its source. BEA positions are historical-cost estimates based on the immediate counterpart, not market values or investment by ultimate owner. ‘More than’ indicates a lower bound, not an exact amount. A recorded stock does not establish new activity or authorisation to operate under sanctions.

Definitions, dates and sources
Blank cells are not zero. Average annual inflation and the latest year-on-year figure appear in separate rows: they are not the same measure. Every annual indicator retains its reference year; when the years differ, the figures are identified as not directly comparable. When a figure is unavailable from the World Bank, an annual IMF estimate is used and identified as such. The latest year-on-year figure is the latest official release verified as of 7 October 2026. This includes advance releases marked as provisional. Mexico may have a fortnightly figure before the full month is published; it is not automatically compared with a monthly figure. The publication date is retained in each source’s details; it does not replace the observation period or the annual average. Policy rates carry their own dates and represent different instruments. Spain and France share the ECB rate. Balances are positive for surpluses and negative for deficits. The IMF may use fiscal years; unemployment retains each source’s definition (ILO estimates, IMF WEO or PCBS), as stated in the details. For Palestine, debt and the fiscal balance cover central government and retain the PCBS definition; they are not presented as consolidated general government. These are economic magnitudes, not measures of relationship quality.
Area retains each source’s territorial coverage; it does not determine sovereignty or effective control. Canada uses an archived national geographic reference. Military expenditure retains the 2024 SIPRI sample distributed by the World Bank: the amount and percentage of GDP use that same definition, which differs from NATO’s. It is not an approved budget or a 2026 figure. Information from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). Military expenditure database · Terms of use0

What each figure measures
Residents are counted by nationality and the coverage of the stated register, not as people born in the other country or as new arrivals in one year. PERE includes dual nationals and people born outside Spain. Study with OPT and stays carrying academic credit are different measures. Travel may include several visits by the same person; FRONTUR arrivals require an overnight stay, whereas the Canadian survey includes day visits. These figures are neither added together nor automatically compared across directions.

Recognition and dialogue mechanisms
France and China established diplomatic relations on 27 January 1964. The strategic partnership of 2004 is accompanied by three dialogues: strategic, economic-financial and people-to-people exchanges. The French profile records meetings of those mechanisms in 2025. They are channels for addressing different questions; an economic meeting does not establish general agreement on security, and a presidential visit does not replace trade-access conditions. [1]
An uneven trade composition
The French profile identifies aerospace, luxury goods and agri-food among its exports, compared with electronics, electrical equipment and textiles among imports from China. These are different chains and markets, not an exchange of equivalent products. The aggregate value shows scale, but a business's exposure depends on its sector and whether it exports, produces locally or uses Chinese components. [1]
Hong Kong requires a separate reading
Investment figures published by the French foreign ministry include positions in Hong Kong in some aggregates. That territory maintains a separate statistical and customs system in many series. Those totals are not transferred to a cell intended to measure mainland China alone. Identifying territorial coverage is essential when comparing a business established in Hong Kong, a financial position routed through it and a factory located in mainland China. [1] [3]
Cultural contacts and state visits
The relationship has a specific dialogue on people-to-people exchanges, as well as university and cultural relations. French documentation records high-level visits, including that of April 2023. These channels allow mobility and cooperation outside the industrial sphere to be addressed. An announced cultural initiative does not by itself provide a student or resident count: those numbers need their own period, nationality criterion and institutional coverage. [2]

The agenda goes beyond the trade balance
The French update of 2026 places political and economic dialogues alongside the European framework. The economic profile allows sectors and trends to be examined with explicit dates. Readers can therefore distinguish relatively stable institutions from figures for a particular year. Differences over international policies or market conditions do not eliminate every business chain, and maintaining those chains does not imply political agreement on every issue either. [2] [3]
What recorded goods show
In 2025, recorded goods trade was 84,638.73 million USD. Shipments from China to France were 48,462.64 million USD, and those in the opposite direction were 36,176.09 million USD. A single reporter is used for both directions. The difference between those flows describes that source's goods balance, not the entire economic balance: services, affiliate activity and investment have independent measures. [4]
